How to Read a Rim Size

There are three common wheel sizes that are stamped or cast into the back side of the hub. These sizes are important to know if you want to put the wheel on your car. However, there are two other measurements that can be just as important in fitting the wheel and the car together properly.

The size of the rim is written on the back of the hub. It is measured in three ways: diameter, width and bolt pattern. For example, a rim with the size 14 by 6 by 4.5 means that the diameter of the rim is 14 inches and it will fit most 14-inch tires. The 6 in the middle means that the width of the rim is 6 inches.

You want to make sure that the rim size is compatible with the size of your tire. This is important because if the rim size is too big or too small, it can be dangerous for your car. The bolt pattern is the distance between two of the bolt holes on the rim. This number also tells you if the rim will fit on your car or not.

To measure the rim size, use a measuring tape to measure the width and diameter of the rim. The diameter is measured from one side of the rim to the other, and the width is measured from the bottom of one bead to the bottom of another bead.
